Hoops for Hope
My wife Claire was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer five years ago and passed away just eight weeks after she received the diagnosis. I remember the moment we learned she had pancreatic cancer like it was yesterday. We had just returned from a trip to Paris and she complained that she wasn’t feeling well. Claire had always been healthy, so we were shocked to hear the diagnosis. After she passed, I knew I needed to do something to honor her. I had been a basketball coach for 50 years in one of the local high schools, so I started a basketball fundraiser to raise money for the Lustgarten Foundation. Within three years, we raised more than $100,000 for pancreatic cancer research. Quickly, the basketball event turned into a walk and the Lustgarten Walk—Mechanicsburg was born.
